Dignitaries, councillors and representatives from the armed forces gathered in the town centre today to mark VE Day.
The service, which remembers the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, 8 May 1945, was led by Reverend Peter Clark and Elizabeth Snowdon, the Chairperson of Hailsham and District Royal British Legion.
During the ceremony, a Falklands poem was read by veteran Rick Butcher and a VE Day poem by the Royal British Legion’s County President, Jean Rogers.
Wreaths were laid by representatives from the Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Hailsham Town Council and Royal British Legion at the town’s memorial.
