Smoke and explosions heard at Diplocks Way

Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at Diplocks Way in Hailsham.

Details are vague at the moment, but the fire was reported at around 20:30 and it is believed to be at Ripley’s scrapyard.

Explosions could be heard shortly after the fire started and residents are being advised to close windows and doors.

Update 23:15. The fire is affecting 6,000 tonnes of scrap metal. Around 55 firefighters and officers are working to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. 

The fire is very deep seated and the incident is likely to last throughout the night.
Sussex Police and the Environment Agency are also in attendance.

Update 21:40: Eight fire pumps are now on-scene. Diplocks Way is closed to traffic.
