DRIVERS spent up to an hour to travel half a mile today as Hailsham became gridlocked, due to roadworks on South Road.
New temporary traffic lights have been installed on the junction of South Road and Ersham Road causing huge tailbacks across the town.
The roadworks are to install ‘new duct pipe and cable via excavation & reinstatement’, according to East Sussex Highways.
In addition to the current works, South East Water plans to close Battle Road from tomorrow (20th November) which is expected to cause longer delays in the centre of Hailsham.
One reader told Hailsham News: “It took me 55 minutes to drive from the Waitrose car park, down George Street to the Neptune Store. It was absolute chaos out there today – where does it all end?”
Reports suggest the traffic lights on South Road will remain in place until 29th November.
