LOSING the town’s Post Office will be a devastating blow for Bexhill residents, according to local councillors, who have written to the Minister to appeal against the potential closure.
The Labour Councillors have posted a letter to Post Office Minister Gareth Thomas MP after a list of 115 Post Offices across the UK which were at threat of closure – including the Post Office in Devonshire Square.
The letter sets out why it’s important to keep the full range of post office services currently being delivered at Devonshire Square; services from buying Postal Orders and stamps to applying for a Passport or driving licence.
Cllr Christine Bayliss, Leader of the Labour Group on Rother and Cabinet member for economic development said: “Our local businesses rely on the local post office for banking their takings, posting parcels and more. It’s vital that we keep the full range of services and don’t end up with a counter at the back of a Town Centre shop selling stamps and postal orders.”
Cllr Gareth Delany, Rother Councilor for St Michaels and Pebsham added: “We don’t have post office facilities in East Bexhill so people rely on the Devonshire Square Post office for the full range of services they offer. To lose those services would be devastating for a lot of people especially those who can’t access online services.”
Cllr Mark Legg, Old Town Councillor and Trade Union activist said: “Any closure of the main post office would pose a serious risk to the livelihoods of our local dedicated post office workers who face the possibility of job losses and the financial insecurity that comes with it.”
The letter concluded: “We urge you to prioritise the needs of the community and work to preserve this essential service for the benefit of all in Bexhill.”
A petition has been launched by the town’s MP, Keiran Mullan to collect names of residents who object to the plans. Thousands have already signed it, which can be found by clicking here.
