Weeks of strike action is to end today after Biffa workers have agreed to up to a 27 per cent pay rise.
Wealden District Council has announced today (Tuesday): “We are pleased to announce that our waste contractor, Biffa, has informed us this afternoon it has reached a negotiated settlement with the GMB union and as a result the industrial action has been brought to an end.
Striking staff will be returning to work tomorrow and we will be working with Biffa to reinstate full collection services and recover outstanding waste as quickly as possible.”
Gary Palmer, GMB Regional Organiser said: “Our members have successfully earned themselves a massive pay rise, but this is simply just reward for the demanding and very important job that they do every day. Refuse collection is one of the most visible services that a council provides, but it’s also one of the most unappreciated until it stops.”
The strike acton started in April and various pay offers were rejected by the GMB Union since then.
