A socially distanced service was held tonight to mark the evening the Hailsham Bonfire celebrations would have taken place.
Hailsham Bonfire Society and Mayor Paul Holbrook laid wreaths at the town’s War Memorial, members took a salute and read out loud the bonfire prayer.
Hailsham Bonfire Society would have been raising money for the Hailsham Foodbank and Sunflowers Crisis Support, but will do so at the 2021 celebrations. The celebrations are a Sussex tradition going back to the 1600’s.
This is something that all the other Sussex Bonfire Societies do and in 2019 jointly raised a total of £64,000 for local charities.
