ROTHER District Council’s deputy leader Christine Bayliss has exclusively revealed to Bexhill News that she has submitted her application to be included on the Labour Party shortlist to contest the next General Election for the Bexhill and Battle constituency.
Ms Bayliss, a Labour Party stalwart who stood for Labour in the 2017 and 2019 General Elections, said: “I would be honoured to represent Bexhill and Battle as the Labour MP.
“The party has made significant gains in recent years and I believe voters are ready for change. I want to be part of that with the aim of Labour returning to power whenever the General Election takes place.
“I love this town and believe the residents need a representative who will look after their interests and act on their behalf. I believe I am that person and hope that my track record will lead to me winning the nomination, but I am taking nothing for granted.”
With the closure of nominations taking place in late January, there has been speculation that Labour Party activist, comedian and actor Eddie Izzard could make a late bid to be included on the shortlist.
Izzard, who prefers to be known as Suzy and uses she/her pronouns, was expected to win the Labour nomination for the Brighton Pavilion constituency being vacated by Britain’s only Green MP Caroline Lucas, who is stepping down at the next General Election, but he/she could only finish second in the selection process.
As yet there has been no confirmation of what he/she will do in terms of trying to achieve a long-held ambition to become an MP although they spent several of his formative years growing up in Bexhill.
