TWO breweries in East Sussex are teaming up to give back to the community by supporting a campaign group that aims to end sewage pollution.
The Hastings Project and The Three Legs Brewery thought it was about time they did something positive with water down on the south coast, so they have got together to do just that, the only way they know how: by brewing a beer and organising some events.
The event, Red Flag, will raise funds to support Hastings and St Leonards Clean Water Action Group to continue the work they do in the community.
The events start today (May 16) to May 19 at various venues.
Hastings and St Leonards Clean Water Action Group is group of volunteers who are testing, lobbying, collaborating and sharing evidence-based information to raise awareness, reduce pollution and improve water quality, for the health of the community and the environment.
According to the Hastings and St Leonard’s Clean Water Action Group, between January and October 2023, B+H No2 discharged 1052 hours of untreated sewage into the sea,
equivalent to six weeks or 44 days continuous pollution.
As well as conducting scientific tests of water quality, the action group also believes regulation of water companies needs to change.
They reported that a 2022 Survation poll of 43,000 people revealed that 69 per cent for water utilities should be re-nationalised. A YouGov poll of 5,943 people in 2023 showed the same result.
The Three Legs Brewery is a brewery based in Bexhill, producing hop forward and ingredient led cask and keg beer. The pub’s motto is “flavour is always first, balance is key and drinkability is a must.”
The brewery was based in Broad Oak for nine years but they now have a new home in Bexhill, brewing and serving beer from their new taproom space in Beeching Road Studios.
The Hastings Project Community Interest Company (CIC) is a not-for-profit brewery based in Hastings.
Its mission is to “brew outstanding beer to raise meaningful donations that have a tangible and positive impact on the community”.
In a joint statement, the breweries said: “Our Red Flag mission at The Hastings Project and The Three Legs Brewery is to raise meaningful donations for Hastings and St Leonards Clean Water Action Group through the sale of Red Flag Beer and awareness-building public events.
“These donations support Clean Water Action’s vital work, including testing
local waters, lobbying efforts, and sharing findings to reduce pollution and to protect our seas for generations to come.”
