Famous white shirt worn by Colin Firth as Mr Darcy sold for £20,000

THE FAMOUS white shirt won by Colin Firth in his role as Mr Darcy in the Pride and Prejudice TV series, and other items, has been sold for £20,000 and proceeds went to a Hastings charity.

The auction, which took place on March 5 and hosted by Kerry Taylor Auctions in London, was extremely successful as buyers are keen to own a piece of film history.

One hundred per cent of the funds will support The Bright Foundation, which provides free access to theatre shows, museum tours, visual arts performance workshops for children who may not have the opportunity to do so, and supporting young people’s careers in creative arts.

Sixty-nine costumes worn by screen legends were auctioned, and those that were sold included:

  • Drew Barrymore’s gown in her role as Danielle in Ever After: A Cinderella Story, sold for £16,000
  • Madonna’s Christian Dior silk ball gown which she wore in her role as Eva Peron in Evita, sold for £40,000
  • Dame Julie Andrew’s costume in the film Victor Victoria, sold for £16,000
  • Robert Downey Junior’s costume in Sherlock Holmes sold for £5,500
  • Cate Blanchett’s costume as Queen Elizabeth I in the film Elizabeth, sold for £4,800
  • Heath Ledger’s costume in Casanova sold for £3,600
  • Meryl Streep’s costume in The French Lieutenant’s Woman sold for £7,000
  • Elizabeth Taylor’s glamourous dress as Nadina Bulichoff in the Young Toscanini sold for £2,600
  • Handwritten lyrics by Tim Rice of the song Don’t Cry for me Argentina sold for £1,700

John Bright is the founder of The Bright Foundation’s founder. He is also the founder and director of Crospop, a world-leading costume house, and has picked these costumes, which were designed by the Crospop, to go under the hammer.

An online auction also took place from February 22 to March 11 and also hosted by Kerry Taylor Auctions, also went successfully.

Amongst the items sold included:

  • A film set tour and lunch with Hugh Bonneville for four guests in June/July 2024, sold for £6,500
  • A signed photograph of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy sold for £3,400
  • Two rare and limited photographs of Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr sold for £1,100
  • Guided tour at the West End celebrating Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier, including lunch or dinner at Claridge’s, sold for £1,100
  • Signed photograph of Johnny Depp sold for £380

John Bright is the founder of The Bright Foundation’s founder. He is also the founder and director of Crospop, a world-leading costume house, and picked these costumes, which were designed by the Crospop, to go under the hammer.

Mr Bright told Kerry Taylor Auctions:  “My life’s work has been committed to costume design for film, tv and theatre and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to pursue this path.

“It is my firmly held belief that the arts and creativity can shape happier and healthier children and enable young people to reach their full potential.”
