Motorist in Hailsham can expect delayed journeys for four weeks as upgrades of old gas mains take place on the main route through the town.
From 17 February, temporary traffic lights will be installed at the first phase of the works at the top end of London Road, between the Battle Road and Summerheath Road. Crews will be replacing old metal gas mains with new plastic pipes which have a lifespan of 80 years.
Two bus stops in the area will be suspended throughout the period of the works which are planned to end on 13 March.
From 24 February, contractors will be closing the junction of London Road and Summerheath Road to traffic and a diversion route will be put in place. This will be in place for three weeks, but residents will still be able to access their properties in this area.
In a notice sent to some residents near to the works, SGN Networks said; “We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, residents and businesses will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come. The new pipe will be able to deliver future green gases within the same pipe.”
