THREE GMB officers accused of wilful obstruction were in court this morning following disruptions on the Biffa picket line last year.
Riot Police descended on the Biffa’s Amberstone depot in Hailsham in May last year when workers were on strike over pay on conditions in the company.
Social media posts showed the moment the action was taken by officers and three union workers were handcuffed. Biffa workers told Hailsham News more than twenty riot Police officers stopped them from blocking the depot gates.
The three appeared at Brighton Magistrates Court this morning (Friday) where they were found not guilty after no evidence was put forward.
Gary Palmer, GMB Officer, and one of those arrested said: “This was always a political case about the rights of people during a cost of living crisis to win enough money to look after their families.
“Our members were taking part in lawful industrial action to win a decent pay rise. This was an attempt by the company and the police to restrict the right to protest. Today’s case shows exactly why people who want to fight for better pay and conditions at work should join GMB”
