Hailsham Cricket Club won their first girls only Sussex Cricket Foundation tournament at a gloriously sunny Roebuck Park on Sunday.
Hailsham were delighted once again to be able to enter two Under 11 girls’ teams in a tournament after their inaugural outing a fortnight ago at Lewes Priory. Hailsham’s B team played some great cricket in their four games and continue to improve and develop their skills with the more experience they receive.
In their first match, the A team played well but fell just 10 runs short of victory against a strong Brighton & Hove team. As the girls got in to their stride, convincing victories followed in their matches versus Bells Yew Green, St Peters and Hailsham B. With Brighton & Hove having won their first three matches, all eyes were on their final match as Hailsham would require St Peters to win that one to stand any chance of winning the tournament. In an exciting finale, St Peters won off the last ball of the match which meant Hailsham A and Brighton & Hove finished level on points, with Hailsham A being declared the tournament winners by virtue of scoring 27 more runs than Brighton & Hove across the whole tournament.
The girls section at Hailsham has grown from strength to strength since being established in the winter and Director of Cricket, Rob Wilkinson, was thrilled not only at the win but that all coaches, parents and the girls themselves help to ensure that the game is foremost enjoyed and played the right way, saying “All of the girls involved today played within the spirit of the game and continue to enjoy their cricket in a positive, friendly environment. We’re so proud of that and to win the tournament as well is the cherry on the cake!”.
