The cost to repair the failed High Street speed humps will be passed on to the contractors, it’s been confirmed to Hailsham News and Talk.
East Sussex Highways says the tax payer will not have to ‘pay twice’ for the renovation works which need extensive repairs to make good, after months of deterioration of the two main speed hump areas.
In February, slabs started to rise up after heavy rainfall and became loose – vehicles were then splashing sand over pedestrians and shop windows. Emergency overnight repairs saw the gaps filled with tarmac as a temporary measure.
East Sussex Highways told HN&T; “We are currently looking at options for a long-term solution to the problem and consulting with relevant stakeholders including the town council and district council.
“We hope to be in a position to confirm details of the work being carried out soon and will keep local residents and businesses informed.”
The contractor, Costain CH2m carried out the 15 month project and will be responsible for the full costs to put right the damage. There is no information yet as to any closure of the High Street during the works.
