THERE are flood warnings in place today (Tuesday) as the River Cuckmere and River Bull burst their banks in Hellingly flooding roads and homes.
Residents are reporting most of the area is under water and homes are being further damaged as vehicles continue to drive through the village.
The Environment Agency are on scene monitoring the situation, but continued rain is only adding to the flood waters.
The Met Office is reporting the following: “The Cuckmere River is high and rising. In the last 24 hours 20mm of rain has been recorded at Cowbeech. From 08:30 on 02/01/2024, flooding will affect fields and rural roads. Flooding will also affect Station Road, Church Lane and Church Road, Hellingly, including gardens and properties on those roads.
A further 10-15mm of rain is forecast until lunch time on 02/01/2024. The river should begin to fall by late afternoon on 02/01/2024, and should return to normal from the morning of 03/01/2024.
Flood impacts should begin to slowly ease when river levels start to fall. Some roads including Mill Road and Church Road may become impassable. Please plan to avoid driving through routes vulnerable to flooding. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast.
More rain is forecast for 04/01/2024, which could see river levels rise again.”
