Josh Babarinde, MP for Eastbourne, has launched a campaign calling for the return of direct train services from Eastbourne to London Bridge after five years since it stopped.
The service, originally withdrawn in early 2020, hasn’t been restored since, leading to inconvenience for both commuters and tourists, according to the MP.
Speaking in the House of Commons this week, Mr Babarinde asked the government to back his campaign to restore this service. In response, the Minister assured him that the Government is committed to improving all forms of transport.
Josh first raised this with Govia Thameslink Rail, the operator, in December 2024 and has been lobbying them ever since. Josh’s negotiations to secure the service have been progressing since then, working alongside the Chamber of Commerce and former Chamber President Dave Cooper MBE.
Speaking about the campaign, Josh Babarinde MP said: “Our town needs and deserves the direct route to London Bridge and back.
“It’s critical to help Eastbourne’s commuters get straight to the City of London to do business and bring home bacon back to our town.
“The improved connectivity would also give our incredible tourism sector a boost too, which is why I will keep making the case for the operator to bring back this vital direct train!”
To ensure as many residents are heard, Josh has set up a petition for people to sign in support of the return of these services.
