Photos: Major disruption as Hailsham suffers serious flooding

Date:

Residents have suffered a day of delays and disruption after around 50mm of rain fell overnight.

Flooding on the A22 Hailsham Bypass caused traffic to back up to Polegate as water covered all four lanes for most of the day.

Hellingly has also suffered the worse flooding for many years as Station Road and Mill Lane were closed to traffic when around two feet of water covered routes in and out of the village.

Other routes such as Ersham Road, Saltmarsh Lane and Old Swan Road were almost impassable at times. Hellingly remains on Red Flood Alert as an additional 10-20mm of rain is expected to fall overnight causing further disruption and potential damage to property on already saturated ground.

The Cuckmere River from Hailsham through to the Cuckmere Haven is on Amber alert until late tomorrow (Saturday).

Police have advised motorists to only make urgent journeys and not to drive through flood water under any circumstances.

Massive thanks to Lewis Isted for supplying these photographs to Hailsham News.
