HUNDREDS of supporters of Eastbourne’s Sovereign Centre took part in a protest this morning (Saturday), organised by a campaigning group.
It took place outside the swimming pool on the seafront, which is under threat due to council funding cuts. The authorities are now in talks with a potential new operator with the aim of keeping the pools open.
Protestors from all ages made their options heard with chanting and banners and supporters made speeches via a loudspeaker demanding action should be taken immediately to save the centre.
It was announced last week that Eastbourne Borough Council is negotiating with a new tenant, GLL, which currently operates 140 pools across the UK.
Joseph Rham, Customer & Communities Director from the company attended the protest and spoke to supporters about his plans to continue the services.
He said: “Over the coming weeks we will begin community engagement activities and will also provide more detailed information on programming, memberships and the lessons & courses that will be available through our customer brand BETTER.
“On a personal note, as someone who was brought up in Eastbourne and has spent many hours swimming at the Sovereign Centre, I fully appreciate its importance to local residents and the social value it provides to the health and wellbeing of the local community.”
MP for Eastbourne, Josh Babarinde, spoke to campaigners about his efforts to make sure their voices are heard and said he will continue to fight to keep the pool open where he learnt to swim.
