PRIME Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed shortly after 5pm on Wednesday, May 22, that the country will go to the polls in a matter of weeks.
Speaking outside a cold and damp Number 10, a rain-soaked Mr Sunak confirmed the date and then defended the Conservatives’ record on several issues, including the economy, and his government’s policy of removing immigrants whose asylum claims are rejected to Rwanda having finally forced those plans through Parliament.
Mr Sunak also said the country’s voters now have a stark choice between the Conservatives and the Labour Party, but said that unlike the Government, Sir Keir Starmer “has no plans”.
He added: “These uncertain times call for a clear plan and bold action to chart a course to a secure future.
“You must choose in this election who has that plan and who is prepared to take that bold action to secure a better future for our country and our children.”
As a result of the election date being locked in, campaigning will now begin in earnest.
