Residents in Hailsham were in shock this weekend after a number of deer was seen to be running wild around the town’s estates.
The animals were reported to have been seen running around London Road, Angelsey Avenue and Manor Park Road, then into Stroma Gardens Saturday lunchtime.
They were also spotted a few days before (Thursday 4th May) running around the town, so it seems wild deer could be a regular sight in Hailsham.
Locals have different opinions on where the deer may have come from. Some say they are just young, that have become lost, others believe they may have escaped from nearby Knockhatch or Boship Farm. Other comments on the Hailsham News and Talk Facebook page suggest they have been driven from local rural areas because of nearby new housing developments.
Trevor Weeks from Wildlife Rescue Ambulance Service (WRAS) told Hailsham News and Talk; “It’s not uncommon for Roe deer to be seen in gardens and housing estates. They are generally okay if people leave them alone and don’t chase them.”
