A RARE and unexpected visitor has been rescued on the Sussex coast after being battered ashore following Storm Goretti.
East Sussex Wildlife Rescue Ambulance Service (WRAS), based in Whitesmith, was called out after reports of what was believed to be a razorbill on Brighton beach, only for rescuers to discover a stunning Puffin instead.
The seabird was found weak and exhausted, but thankfully showed no obvious injuries.
WRAS immediately placed the puffin on fluids and into an incubator, giving it much-needed warmth and rest as it recovers from its ordeal.
Puffins are not normally seen anywhere near beaches at this time of year, as they spend the winter months far out at sea. Wildlife experts believe the powerful winds and rough conditions brought by Storm Goretti likely forced the bird inland, leaving it unable to return to open water.
A WRAS spokesperson said the rescue team was keeping everything crossed that the Puffin would make it through the night with a little extra care and support.
If the bird continues to stabilise, it will be transferred to RSPCA Mallydams Wood Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre, which has already agreed to take over its longer-term rehabilitation if needed.
WRAS is urging members of the public to report any exhausted or injured wildlife found following recent storms, but to keep a safe distance and seek professional help.
