Support group offers breastfeeding support event in Hailsham

Date:

A WOMAN from Eastbourne, who runs breastfeeding support groups in the area, is encouraging parents to get the support they may need at an event to mark National Breastfeeding in Public Day.

Vivien David-Makai, who moved to the area three years ago, has been supporting parents with everything related to infant feeding and sleep, two topics which typically go hand in hand.

A free event being held at the James West Community Centre in Hailsham this weekend (22nd February) aims to raise awareness that breastfeeding in public is a legal right, and many women still feel ashamed or uncomfortable when feeding their babies in public, according to the organiser.

Vivien commented: “Around 18 months ago, we established a free weekly support group for breastfeeding parents in Eastbourne. It’s the most inclusive and gentle group I’ve ever seen, typically welcoming 13-20 moms each week. I provide free, hands-on support during our meetings, but more importantly, it’s a safe space for parents to talk, learn, or even vent if needed. We’re lucky to witness friendships forming and moms finding their ‘tribe’, myself included!

“Over time, a few breastfeeding moms and I became more organised and expanded our initiatives. We’ve hosted events such as Halloween and Christmas parties, a ‘breastfeeding in public’ awareness event, and even a local photoshoot on the Dotto train in response to a breast pump company’s tram photo shoot, making it more community-centered.
