Motorists stranded as River Cuckmere bursts banks

Date:

A number of motorists have been rescued this evening as the River Cuckmere burst its banks making much of Hellingly and Horsebridge roads impassable.

Station Road, Mill Road, Church Lane and Upper Horsebridge Road have been closed to all traffic as almost 25mm of rain has fallen since this morning, flooding the roads and forcing the River Cuckmere to burst its banks.

Numerous vehicles attempted to drive through the flood water on Upper Horsebridge Road this evening (Thursday) and had to be rescued by local volunteers.

Highways Officials have advised motorists to find another route and do not attempt to drive through flood water which can not only damage your vehicle, but can put your life at risk.

River levels are expected to rise over the next few hours.
