WORK is underway to fix a water leak which has caused damage to Polegate’s High Street.
Residents were concerned about the water which had been pouring from a hole in the road for a number of days.
A sinkhole had been developing close to the town’s railway crossing, causing debris and nearby floods.
Contractors are now working on the repair on behalf of South East Water.
During the leak, Polegate Mayor, Councillor Dan Dunbar said on social media: “I have spoken with South East Water this afternoon regarding the ongoing water leak in the High Street. I have been informed the delay is with awaiting a permit to work from Network Rail due to close proximity to the railway line. Once this has been granted a road closure will be put in place to carry out the required repairs.”
Workers have suggested the road will be open by 5am on Wednesday morning.
