Emergency staff have been thanked by the public after providing essential services following the evacuation at the Diplocks last night (Monday).
Wealden District Council opened up a rest centre, following a request by Police, around two hours after emergency services were called to The Diplocks, following a report of a suspicious package.
Staff provided accommodation and refreshments to around 40 local residents, including children, who had been evacuated because of the police operation. The centre which was located at the Hailsham Community and Civic Centre, remained open until just after 11pm when Police allowed the residents to return to their homes.
As part of the local authority’s emergency planning responsibilities, the Council has a rota of trained staff who can be called on at any time to set up and operate rest centres at locations across the District, should the need arise.
Investigations are continuing into the incident and Police are questioning a 24 year-old local man.
