Hailsham protesters descend on council offices ahead of climate meeting

Date:

Environmental campaigners are holding a peaceful protest in Hailsham this morning ahead of a full Wealden Council meeting.

Members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) campaign group turned out in force to highlight the importance of climate issues – Wealden Council is meeting today to decide if a Climate Emergency should be declared.

Ben from XR told Hailsham News; “We’re standing here in temperatures which are 10 degrees above the average for this time of year, this isn’t normal, it is man-made climate warming and we need to act now. That’s all XR is saying is that we need to act now and 2050 is way too late.”

Wealden District Council says it recognises the need for action to reach net-zero emissions both locally, nationally and internationally and it has taken the proactive approach of recommending, within its report to Cabinet of 17 July, that Full Council declares a ‘Climate Emergency’ and endorses a number of key commitments. This includes the development and resourcing of an action plan by a Cabinet Advisory group (CAG), with initial outcomes to be presented at December Cabinet.
