HUNDREDS are expected to attend a peaceful protest in an attempt to secure funding to save the Sovereign Centre in Eastbourne.
A Facebook group called ‘Save the Sovereign Centre’ has put out a call for supporters to join the protest, which will take place at the swimming pool on Saturday, February 1st.
A spokesperson said: “We need to be as big and loud as possible, which means numbers! Please come along, share this event and invite friends/family. This is our opportunity to show how much this centre means to us, and how important it is to secure the facilities for future generations.
To tell them that we are NOT happy with being labelled as 7th worst town in the UK, that we will NOT let them continue taking away our vital facilities. We need to stand together and we need to do it now!”
Eastbourne Borough Council attributed the decision to escalating costs.
The council explained that the centre, constructed in 1977, had experienced a sharp rise in operating expenses, particularly for staffing, heating, and chemicals.
In November, the council approved the closure of the pools as a cost-saving measure.
