Beaches closed after untreated wastewater dumped into sea

Date:

As Bexhill gears up to welcome holidaymakers from around the country, the authorities are advising visitors and residents to avoid the beaches and not to enter the sea, following an outlet of raw sewage.

Rother District Council posted on its social media: “There has been a sewage discharge from the Galley Hill pumping station earlier this evening due to a technical issue that has now been resolved. Investigations are underway and we will issue further updates as soon as possible.”

The red flags were being flown across the whole length of the promenade today to warn visitors, but some were adamant to enjoy the seafront – our reporters could find no visible warning to beach-goers.

Southern Water has announced that a significant issue with electrical power at one of its wastewater pumping stations caused ‘a release into the sea at Bexhill.”

A horrific video filmed by resident Fay Dalby (main image) shows dirty waste pouring out of a sewer outlet close to South Cliff yesterday and has been viewed thousands of times on Facebook.

A resident who lives on West Parade, and wants to stay anonymous called Bexhill News some weeks ago to say she regularly sees dirty water pouring into the sea mainly at high tide. She told us: “This has been going on for years and it’s being ignored. I keep calling Southern Water about it and can never get through. I got through once, and then got cut off.”

The Environment Agency is warning residents to not swim in the sea along Norman’s Bay, Bexhill and parts of Hastings.
